Main Service

Judges 7:1-18 – Gideon’s chosen 300 from 32,000 men

Many are called, few are chosen

  • Many are invited , few are chosen or allowed in because of not fulfilling the terms & conditions for the invitation – having wedding garments ??
  • Parable of the banquet …Matthew 22:1-14

God is a jealous God, unwilling to share His glory with another… Exodus 34:14, Isaiah 42:8

  • God is jealous when someone gives to another something that rightly belongs to Him.
  • God is possessive of the worship and service that belong to Him
  • Jealousy is a sin when it is a desire for something that does not belong to you.
  • If a husband sees another man flirting with his wife, he is right to be jealous, for only he has the right to flirt with his wife. (GotQuestions.org)

God can use the weak & foolish things of the world to confound the strong & the wise…1 Corinthians 1:27

  • God wanted to use 300 men to destroy over 100,000 men
  • To show His power and might
  • We need to acknowledge that we live and operate by the mercy and grace of God in all things.
Ephesians 2:8-10
  • We are saved by grace through faith and not by works or our efforts so that we may not boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life….
Jeremiah 9: 23-24
  • This is what the LORD says: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, nor the strong man in his strength, nor the wealthy man in his riches.
  • But let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD, who exercises loving devotion, justice and righteousness on the earth—for I delight in these things,” declares the LORD.

Fear??

  • Those who feared allowed to leave 1st — 22000 out of the 32000
  • God does not like to work with those who remain in fear.
  • Indicates our lack of faith or trust in God’s ability over the situation
  • ..where we believe more in telling God how big our problem is instead of telling the problem how big our God is!
2 Timothy 1:7
  • For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and sound mind
  • …we need to trust in the power of God to protect us, love of God to surround us and the perspective of Christ to comfort us??
1 John 4:18
  • There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. The one who fears has not been perfected in love.

Fear of the Lord…

  • … is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment… Proverbs 9:10 (NLT)
  • …  is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline… Proverbs 1:7 (NLT)
  • …  leads to life, bringing security and protection from harm… Proverbs 19:23 (NLT)
  • …  teaches wisdom; humility precedes honor Proverbs 15:33 (NLT)
  • …  is the foundation of true wisdom. All who obey his commandments will grow in wisdom. Praise him forever!… Proverbs 111:10 (NLT)
  • …  is true wisdom; to forsake evil is real understanding… Job 28:28 (NLT)
  • … is obeying the Lord above anything else. Putting His Word above all others. =>  He will delight in obeying the LORD. He will not judge by appearance nor make a decision based on hearsay… Isaiah 11:3 (NLT)

God may test one before an assignment – Test of Faith to know what is truly in our hearts?

  • And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him… Hebrews 11:6
  • The heart of man is deceitfully wicked…only known by the Lord who tests the heart and rewards people accordingly…Jeremiah 17: 9-10
  • Abraham tested by God by being told to sacrifice Isaac and was blessed for being faithful (full of faith)Genesis 22
  • Testing of our faith produces perseverance…

Why are we tested by God? Why does God allow temptation?

James 1:2-8 (AMP)
  • 2 Consider it nothing but joy, my [b]brothers and sisters, whenever you fall into various trials.
  • 3 Be assured that the testing of your faith [through experience] produces endurance [leading to spiritual maturity, and inner peace].
  • 4 And let endurance have its perfect result and do a thorough work, so that you may be perfect and completely developed [in your faith], lacking in nothing.
  • 5 If any of you lacks wisdom [to guide him through a decision or circumstance], he is to ask of [our benevolent] God, who gives to everyone generously and without rebuke or blame, and it will be given to him.
  • 6 But he must ask [for wisdom] in faith, without doubting [God’s willingness to help], for the one who doubts is like a billowing surge of the sea that is blown about and tossed by the wind. 7 For such a person ought not to think or expect that he will receive anything [at all] from the Lord, 8 being a double-minded man, unstable and restless in all his ways [in everything he thinks, feels, or decides].
1 Peter 1:7 (NLT)
  • These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.

Falling into sin – nothing to do with God but all about me and my desires

James 1: 12-17 (AMP)
  • 12 Blessed [happy, spiritually prosperous, favored by God] is the man who is steadfast under trial and perseveres when tempted; for when he has passed the test and been approved, he will receive the [victor’s] crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.
  • 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God” [for temptation does not originate from God, but from our own flaws]; for God cannot be tempted by [what is] evil, and He Himself tempts no one.
  • 14 But each one is tempted when he is dragged away, enticed and baited [to commit sin] by his own [worldly] desire (lust, passion). 15 Then when the illicit desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin has run its course, it gives birth to death. 16 Do not be misled, my beloved brothers and sisters.
  • 17 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above; it comes down from the Father of lights [the Creator and Sustainer of the heavens], in whom there is no variation [no rising or setting] or shadow [d]cast by His turning [for He is perfect and never changes].

The Test by the Water

  • @Laps water with his tongue as a dog, putting their hand to their mouth – 300 men
  • – watchful, ready for battle
  • –  Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour… 1 Peter 5:8
  • –  Connection to shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the enemy… Ephesians 6:16??
  •  – Cant please God without faith… Hebrew 11:6??
  • Kneels down to drink with mouth in the stream
  • – fearful not ready for victory

God calls those He wants – Those He knew, He chooses, calls, justifies & glorifies

  • Romans 8:29-30
  • For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.
  • And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory.

Purah the servant??

  • Type of the Holy Spirit?…John 14:26
  • 26 But the [a]Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything that I have told you.

God provides for & empowers those He sends

  • The men took provisions and a trumpet
  • God will not send you where His grace is not sufficient for you
  • …where His Hand cannot protect you
  • … where His love cannot surround you
  • God is working in me to give me the desire and the power to do what pleases Him…Philippians 2:13
  • Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think…Ephesians 3:20
  • …may God equip me with all I need for doing his will. May He produce in me, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to him. All glory to him forever and ever! Amen…Hebrews 13:21

The camp of Midian was below in a valley

  • We are the head and not the tail, above and not beneath … Deuteronomy 28:13
  • Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me… Psalm 23:4

Gideon feared, but God encouraged him

  • Using the enemy to declare that Gideon has victory from the Lord
  • …You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies… Psalm 23:5
  • Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen…Hebrews 11:1
  • I need to overcome my fear and learn to walk in the victory that God has already declared in His Word for me.

God confirms His Word & prospers it where He sends it

  • Gideon got confirmation from through hearing the dream of the enemy of what God had already told Him of the victory that was his and the people of Israel.
  • …who confirms the word of his servant and fulfills the counsel of his messengers… Isaiah 44:26
  • It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it… Isaiah 55:11

Power of midnight prayer, praise & worship

  • Went with a trumpet and a jar of light in clay jars
  • … how we have to go with (walk in ) the revelation (light) of who we are in Christ and the victory that He has already provided for us, in pleasing faith, rejoicing as an act of faith.
  • Acts 16: Paul & Silas prayed, praised and worshiped at midnight before being delivered from bondages

They shouted – For the Lord & for Gideon
  • Return God’s Word back to Him – bringing His Word back to His remembrance … Isaiah 43:26
  • God’s Word does not return to Him void but goes forth to accomplish that for which it was sent & He prospers it where He sends it… Isaiah 55:11
Ecclesiastes 9:11
  • I saw something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong; neither is the bread to the wise, nor the wealth to the intelligent, nor the favor to the skillful; rather, time and chance happen to all.

.

But if God be for me, who can prevail against me? … Romans 8:31

.
Not by power, not by might, but by the Spirit of the Lord… Zechariah 4:6
.
Psalm 20:6-7
  • Now I know that the LORD saves His anointed; He answers him from His holy heaven with the saving power of His right hand.
  • Some trust in chariots and others in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.

.

# Oh Lord,

I repent for all aspects of fear , doubt and unbelief in me,

For murmuring and complaining on any situation,

For failing the test of faith.

Oh Lord, Help my unbelief,

Give me the gift of faith,

Create in me a clean heart and renew a steadfast spirit in me,

To believe without doubting,

To have pleasing faith,

To overcome fear by taking a step of faith,

knowing that You take over, provide for and empower those willing, obedient and faithful (full of faith).

May I be among the chosen of those that are called and never fall into the category of those that fear and never try or those that fail the test of faith.

Amen!
